Hungry? Here’s How Building a Website is Like Making a Sandwich

By Mukul Sheopory

website-sandwich-1You’ve been thinking about building a website, but with all the other responsibilities you carry as a small business owner, the thought of taking on another project might be overwhelming. It doesn’t have to be.

I’m going to show you how building a website can be as simple as making a sandwich. You can do it yourself or hire someone to do it for you, and your approach will depend on:

— Your comfort level with the technology
— How customized you need your website to be
— Your budget

Get out the mayo and let’s go!

The DIY way to build a website (or make a sandwich)

website-sandwich-2The first option is to make a simple sandwich (like a PB&J) yourself. The advantages are:

It’s easy. You don’t need technical skills.

It’s affordable. It’s cheaper than going to a restaurant.

You can make it any time. Got the munchies at 3 a.m.? Go for it!

Like slapping some peanut butter and jelly on bread and calling it a day, building a website yourself is the easiest and most affordable option. You don’t need technical skills for using template-based DIY options like GoDaddy’s Website Builder, Weebly and Wix.

website-sandwich-3If your website requires more customized features, such as an appointment scheduler, making it yourself is like making a Rueben at home. It’s doable, but you need to have the right ingredients in the fridge and the know-how to put them all together. Same goes for building a more advanced website on a platform like WordPress.

WordPress  is a popular open-source platform that comes with thousands of plugins for all kinds of functionality.

Hiring a pro to make your website (or sandwich)

website-sandwich-4Then there is the approach to have an expert make a website for you. The benefits:

It’s also easy. You’ll have to help come up with content, but you can leave the design work to the experts.

It saves time. You might have the best intentions for building your own site, but time can get away from you. Hiring a pro lets you rest assured that your site will be up in time.

It’s made with expertise. That Reuben is probably going to taste a little better if you get it from your favorite deli, right?

You’ve also got options if you choose to have a pro create your website — mostly with regards to the complexity of the site — so you’ll want to have a fairly clear idea of your needs before you start looking for a designer. When you’re ready to start hiring, here are some good questions to ask.

That’s a wrap

Just like there is a sandwich for every taste and budget, there’s a website building approach that will suit your unique circumstances. For more detail, check out the hoagie-size version of this post. And good luck!
